Vestibular Rehabilitation and Concussion Therapy

The vestibular system is responsible for some of your most important day-to-day functions, from perceiving head movement, to staying upright and seeing clearly when you’re in motion. But when that system is disrupted, symptoms like vertigo, dizziness and balance disorders can literally throw you off balance.

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy, also known as VRT, is a specialized form of therapy designed to alleviate those symptoms, whether you are suffering from chronic dizziness, recovering from a concussion, or you have been diagnosed with another vestibular disorder.

Common Symptoms of a Vestibular Disorder:

5

Dizziness that comes and goes or remains constant throughout the day.

5

Experiencing vertigo, light-headedness, or feeling imbalanced or unstable.

5

Tinnitus (hearing ringing, whooshing, buzzing); having ear pressure or pain.

5

Vision issues, including difficulty focusing or looking at screens.

5

Motion sensitivity, leading to nausea, dizziness, or light-headedness.

What Causes a Vestibular Disorder?

The vestibular system involves the organ in the inner ear, which helps detect head position and movement, as well as the parts of the brain that process that information. For some patients, vestibular disorders arise unexpectedly. But most stem from head traumas or concussions, inner ear infections, aging, medications, or other brain-related issues.

How Does Vestibular Rehabilitation and Concussion Therapy Work?

Your physiotherapist will start by performing a comprehensive assessment that includes the evaluation of your eye movements using video recording devices, testing for sensitivity to motion and the balance system, and testing other areas that could be contributing to the problem, such as your neck.

Once we have a better understanding of your condition, there are a wide variety of treatment options available to help reduce your symptoms, including eye exercises, balance challenges, and canalith repositioning maneuvers to reduce vertigo.

Common vestibular disorders that we treat include:

5

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)

5

Ménière’s disease

5

Labyrinthitis

5

Vestibular neuritis

5

Post-concussion syndrome
