Frequently Asked Questions

What is physiotherapy and how can I benefit?

Physiotherapy is the science of movement and function. It’s beneficial for anyone who experiences difficulty with movement, strength, or pain. But it’s especially helpful if you’ve sustained an injury, strain, fracture, or any loss of movement. Using manual therapy, specialized modalities, and personalized exercise plans, physiotherapy will help improve your endurance, mobility and strength, and allow you to live a pain free life.

What is involved in the initial consultation?

During your free initial phone consultation, our rehab coordinator will walk you through a full medical screening, map out your pain points or injuries, and discuss possible treatment options at no cost to you.

What happens during my first appointment?
Your initial consultation will provide us with all of the information we need to get started. During your appointment, your practitioner will assess how your body moves to determine all possible causes of your symptoms, and provide you with a diagnosis if one applies. This will be followed by your first treatment session, where you’ll learn more about your body and your symptoms, and get a first look at your personalized at-home exercise and treatment plan.

Treatment itself can vary depending on your injury or symptoms. Most appointments involve learning about your injury and body, how to optimize recovery, hands on treatment, and the use of modalities like shockwave, acupuncture, or laser therapy.

What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear something comfortable that you’re able to move in and allows us access to your injury or the source of your pain. Gym attire, such as shorts and a tank top, is a great option. If your condition is related to an accessory or environment, it might be helpful to bring those along with you, for example, specific footwear, backpacks or bags, or photos of your work station.
Does insurance cover your services?
Yes! All of our services are provided by Registered Physiotherapists (PT), Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) or Registered Chiropractors (DC). They are licensed and follow practice regulations set out by province governing bodies, which means our services are covered by private insurance plans that offer physiotherapy, massage therapy and chiropractic benefits. It’s helpful to check with your insurance provider regarding the amount and frequency of coverage you are entitled for.
Does OHIP cover physiotherapy?
Unfortunately, physiotherapy is not covered by OHIP.
Can you bill my extended health insurance company directly?

At Access Rehab, we take care of the paperwork while you can concentrate on your recovery. We direct bill your insurance so you only pay the portion not covered by your insurer. We also offer eClaims as a value-added service to our patients. Get in touch to learn more.

What if I was injured at work or through a car accident?
We accept patients who have claims under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario (WSIB) and those who have claims under a regulated auto insurance company. If you were injured at work, you are required to complete a WSIB claim with your employer immediately. When your claim is approved, you are welcome to make an appointment for an initial consultation and have your claim number, and the name of your adjudicator and employer ready so we can bill WSIB directly.

If you were injured through a motor vehicle accident (MVA), please call to speak with our rehab coordinator. We’ll require your claim and policy number, the name of your adjudicator, and your auto insurance company so we can bill the auto insurer directly.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No! Our practitioners are primary health care providers, which means you do not need a referral or requisition to be assessed or treated. However, some insurance companies still require a physician’s referral in order to get physiotherapy costs reimbursed. We’re happy to help you smooth out the details with your insurance provider.
I was referred to another clinic by my doctor, but I would prefer to come to Access Rehab. Can I do that?
Of course! You have the right to choose the clinic that is right for you. If you’re unhappy with the level of care you’re currently receiving or you want to try a different clinic, our doors are always open. Your insurance provider will still cover you, despite the name of the clinic on the referral form.
Do I need to have imaging done before my appointment?
No. Most patients do not require any imaging. We will perform a full examination of your injury and only recommend imaging if we need more information. If you already have imaging, please bring the results with you to your first appointment.
How often should I change my orthotics?
Ideally, you should replace your orthotics every two years, especially if you wear them regularly in shoes designed for everyday use. Over time, daily wear and tear will lessen the insoles effectiveness. If your orthotics are used for sporting activities, such as running or basketball, you should consider replacing them every year.
